Ethicon Inc. issued a voluntary global market withdrawal for Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh in May 2016.
According to an Urgent Field Safety Notice (PDF), it was associated with higher rates of hernias re-opening (also known as “recurrence”) and requiring another surgery in two large studies in Germany in Denmark.
The first lawsuit was filed by Matthew Huff, a man who was implanted with Phyiomesh in 2013. It was stitched into his abdominal wall to help repair a ventral hernia.
In July 2015, he developed severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, chills, and redness. He was diagnosed with an infection and treated for two abscesses and an intestinal fistula.
He was left with serious health problems, including two open abdominal wounds that must be cleaned and packed daily, according to the lawsuit.
The case is set for trial on January 22, 2018 before Judge J. Phil Gilbert. It was originally filed on April 1, 2016 in the Southern District of Illinois — In Re: Matthew Huff v. Ethicon Inc. — Case No. 3:16-cv-00368.
